Embrace Inner Wisdom
Who am I? We don't ask the question often. There is a meditation that asks us to look at this, to recognize what we are not, and to suffer less.
Have you ever paused to ponder who you truly are? Take a moment and delve into this inquiry. What thoughts, memories, and associations spring forth when you contemplate your identity? How do you define yourself, and does this definition serve your well-being?
Consider this: when your favorite team loses on a reality show, do you feel a personal defeat? When your phone breaks, does it feel like a part of you is injured? And when someone misjudges you, does it pierce through to your core? These instances can leave us feeling wronged and misunderstood, especially when it's someone we care about. We wonder, "How could they not know me? Why would they say that about me?"
But here's a liberating truth: you are not defined by these external roles, labels, or the ego. Sit with that for a moment. By setting aside the ego, you may find that the hurt and anger start to dissolve. Understanding this process of identification can free you from the attachments that cause pain.
Let's explore a simple meditation to help uncover your true self and embrace inner wisdom.
Meditation on Self-Identity
Find a comfortable spot to sit or lie down in a peaceful environment. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths, allowing yourself to relax.
Focus on your breath through your nose only, feeling the air fill your lungs, and then release it naturally.
Now, ask yourself silently, "Where am I?" "What am I?" "Who am I?" Let these questions linger in your mind.
Shift your attention to different parts of your body, starting from the bottom up. Are you your toes? Would you cease to exist if you lost them? Explore this inquiry with each part of your body as you move upward.
Open your eyes and observe your surroundings. Are you your belongings? Your possessions? Or the feelings associated with them?
Close your eyes again, and repeat your name silently in your mind. Does this name define your identity? What if you had no name at all?
Experiment with saying, "I am..." followed by a different name. Notice how it feels.
Acknowledge any emotions that arise. Are you your emotions? Or do they simply pass through you?
Realize that your clothes, body, and reputation are not your true self.
Continue this meditation for about twenty minutes.
Take a deep breath, gently open your eyes, and notice how you feel. Perhaps you'll sense a shift, feeling less attached to external objects and thoughts.
Repeat this meditation as needed to remind yourself of who you truly are—a radiant soul beyond labels and attachments.
